The key element: choosing the right size rug for your living room

The size of the rug is a crucial element for the balance of your living room! A rug that is too small can appear lost in the space, while a rug that is too large can overwhelm your furniture and create a visual overload.

Our team's advice:

  • A rug under the coffee table. Ideally, the rug should cover the area under the coffee table and under the main living room furniture. The goal is to create a cohesive space.

  • Rugs to define an area : if your living room is open to other rooms, a rug can delimit a reading corner, a TV area or a relaxation area.

  • Size : For a standard-sized living room, a rug measuring 250x150cm or 300x200cmis often a good choice. Remember to leave some space between the rug and the walls to avoid a cramped feeling.

Please consult our size guide for more information.

Choosing the right material

The choice of material is essential to determine the texture, durability, and ease of maintenance of the rug. Some materials are better suited to high-traffic areas, while others provide a touch of luxury and comfort.

Popular materials:

  • Wool. A classic in high-end rugs, wool is soft, insulating, and durable. It also offers excellent stain resistance. And luckily for you, we offer a selection of over 1200 Berber wool rugs in our online store and in our Parisian showroom.

  • Cotton. Lightweight and easy to care for, cotton is a good option for living rooms that aren't frequently used. Did you know that Berber rugs, while mostly made from natural sheep's wool, also come in cotton? These are Boucherouite kilims, flat-woven and 100% cotton.

  • Sisal and jute. Perfect for a natural ambiance, these materials bring an organic touch and are suitable for all types of interiors.

  • Synthetic rugs. More affordable and easier to clean, synthetic rugs are perfect for homes with pets!

The color and pattern of the rug: finding harmony with your decor

The color and pattern of your rug should complement the overall ambiance of your living room. If your space is already very colorful, opt for neutral tones or subtle patterns, such as our selection of Beni Ouarain Berber rugs with patterns woven into the weave. Conversely, if you have a more understated decor, a brightly colored or patterned rug can add a touch of vibrancy. So, why not choose a colorful Berber rug?

Advice :

  • Neutral colors : beige, gray, off-white, ecru , or taupe tones adapt easily to any type of decor and can make a room brighter

  • Geometric or contemporary patterns. Modern patterns add a dynamic touch. If your furniture is simple, don't hesitate to add a patterned rug to give the room personality.

  • Traditional patterned rugs. A Persian or Oriental rug can add elegance and character to your living room, especially if your decor is classic or vintage. Are you familiar with vintage Berber rugs? Discover our selection of vintage Berber rugs.

Choosing a rug to match the style of your living room

The rug should blend harmoniously with the overall style of your living room. Whatever the dominant style of your decor, there's a rug to suit every atmosphere!

  • Scandinavian style : Opt for rugs in neutral colors and simple patterns, in wool or cotton for a clean and warm style

  • In an industrial style, a rug made of natural materials like jute or sisal will provide an interesting contrast with metal or wooden furniture.

  • Bohemian style : rugs with ethnic or oriental patterns, in bright colors and varied textures, will be perfect for creating a unique and relaxed atmosphere.

The price of the rug

Rug prices vary considerably depending on size, materials, and origin. It's important to set a budget before you begin your search. However, keep in mind that a quality rug, if well cared for, can last for years and be a good investment.

Advice

  • High-end rugs. If you're looking for a high-end rug, handwoven wool rugs, such as Berber or Oriental rugs, can be expensive. Did you know that there are also differences in quality among Berber wool rugs? A Beni Ouarain will be less expensive than a M'rirt Berber rug , but the aesthetics and finish will be different.

  • Entry-level rugs For more affordable options, synthetic fiber or cotton rugs can offer a good alternative without sacrificing style.
