Caring for a Berber rug

A Berber rug is a wool rug made in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco on traditional looms using time-honored weaving techniques. Traditionally, it is women who weave these rugs, affirming the preservation of Berber culture through their graphic and symbolic vocabulary. If you would like to learn more about the different types of Berber rugs and their various manufacturing processes, please visit our dedicated page.

Choosing a Berber rug for your home is a safe bet. Their variety of styles, colors, and patterns means they adapt beautifully to all types of interiors and decorating styles.

Handcrafted, woven over many weeks, then washed and dried under the Moroccan sun, Berber rugs represent a choice for lasting décor. Choosing a Berber rug means choosing a rug for years to come!

Since Berber rugs are mainly woven from sheep's wool, some care tips and tricks are necessary to preserve their beauty and longevity.

Daily care of a Berber rug

  • Vacuum your carpet regularly!

A weekly vacuuming, without the brush attachment to avoid damaging the wool, in the direction of the pile, will restore volume and deep clean your Berber rug. Berber rugs, when new, shed wool for a few weeks; this is normal! This allows the removal of dust and dirt, which can damage the fibers over time.

  • Use a stiff brush to revive a rug

Don't hesitate to brush your Berber rug regularly to restore its new appearance and prevent natural wear and tear.

  • Shake it, move it, turn it over.

A rug that stays in place for many months will show wear more easily in high-traffic areas or under furniture. We strongly recommend moving them several times a year. You can even rotate them so that the part of the rug that was under your sofa is now under your coffee table. This will ensure even wear across the entire surface of your rug and guarantee its longevity. As an added bonus, it allows you to refresh your interior décor; by turning your rug over, you'll see it from a new angle and with a new pattern!

  • Beware of the light!

To preserve the vibrant colors of your Berber rug, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. This can cause fading and damage the natural shades of the wool. You can move it regularly to balance its light exposure.

What to do in case of a stain?

Many of you are tempted by a sublime Beni Ouarain Berber rug with patterns woven into the weave, but some of you are hesitant to choose a light-colored rug for your living room. Rest assured, no stain is permanent; the key is to act quickly.

  • Try to intervene on the task as quickly as possible

The longer you wait, the more the stain will gradually penetrate the fibers and pile of your carpet

  • Gently blot the affected area with a clean, damp cloth, without rubbing, so as not to push the dirt deeper into the fibers

  • Use only mild products (white vinegar, Marseille soap, baking soda). Remember to test on a small area before treating the entire stain

  • Allow to dry completely

Perform a professional cleaning

If your rug is particularly dirty or has accumulated deep-set dust, professional cleaning may be recommended. You can contact your usual dry cleaner, making sure they will send your rug to a company specializing in wool rug cleaning, or you can contact a professional directly.

To thoroughly wash a Berber rug, there is no secret: you must wash it thoroughly with a large quantity of water, according to the washing methods used by the artisans themselves once the weaving of the rugs is finished.

We recommend that you use La Carpetterie, a company specializing in carpet cleaning, and particularly in Berber wool carpets.

As an added bonus, you'll receive a 10% discount if you come from us!

By following these care instructions, you can extend the life of your Berber rug and preserve the authenticity of its colors and patterns. And if you have any questions, our customer service team is available to assist you, advise you, and guide you in caring for your Berber rug!
