They are handcrafted in northern Ghana, more specifically in Upper Ghana on the border with Burkina Faso, by men and women of the Bolgatanga tribe. Bolga fans are made from elephant grass (miscanthus) which grows in the wooded areas of the country.
They have a braided or leather-covered handle, depending on the model, as well as a sturdy loop at the end of the handle for hanging it on the wall, for example
